"The Birth of the Bourgois Art Museum – Johann Friedrich Städel and his Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main" (German)

The Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main is considered one of the most important art museums in Germany today. It was founded by the wealthy bourgeois banker Johann Friedrich Städel (1728–1816), who left his art collection as the foundation of a "Städelsches Kunstinstitut" (Städel’s Art Institute) to be established after his death. Städel’s contemporaries like J.W. Goethe appreciated his treasures while being guided through the gallery by the owner.

Using a unique approach of combining the reconstruction of architecture and art presentation, this book reconstructs Städel’s concept of collecting against the backdrop of European traditions of collecting art in the 18th century.

On the basis of largely unknown document records, this book portrays European discussions in which Städel’s Art Institute, as one of the earliest bourgeois museums, was involved and makes a contribution to the understanding of that time of change which initiated the birth of a bourgeois art museum.
